Music Generated Flashback
Today I was flipping around the radio trying to find a decent song on my daily commute to work and heard one that transported me back in time: Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall”.
“We don’t need no education…”
Holy cow! All of the sudden my mind raced back to 5th grade while standing in line outside of Mt. Spurr Elementary School in Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska. A flurry of memories rushed in as the song continued:
“Hey! Teacher! Leave us kids alone…”
Suddenly, I remembered my year of:
- Curling my hair like Farrah Fawcett
- Looking like “Barbara” on “One Day at a Time”
- Delivering a speech in front of the entire grade school and landing the position of Secretary of Student Council
- Cheerleading (Go Buccaneers!!)
- My first boyfriend (An older guy. Oh how those 6th grade girls disliked me for taking their beloved Jeff away. Where are you now, Mr. Gleim?)
- Roller skating in a downtown Anchorage parade
- Riding my 3 speed bike wherever it would take me
- Sleepovers at my BFF’s house where I always won the dance contests
- Winning my first bowling tournament, complete with a nice swanky trophie to show for it
- Ice skating at the local rink where I envisioned myself as the next Linda Fratianne
Interesting how hearing a song can take you back in time. *sigh* I loved every minute of it.

I LOVED Barbara from One Day at a Time! Who didn’t? Odd thing is, I also had a thing for the mom on that show, too. Can’t really explain that. The older sister did nothing for me.
Can you believe that my own Grandmother thought I looked like Barbara?! Crazy. The mom (Ann) was cool as well, IMHO. (My mom looked absolutely nothing like her BTW.)
I remember watching that show. Schnieder (sp?)always bugged me. I love music for that exact reason. I think it’s interesting that people can’t remember general things, but music and song lyrics stick with you forever.

How cool! I have songs that do this to me too. It’s quite funny actually. =) When I hear that song “Got My Mind Set on You” I think of my old friend Erica and I dancing and singing with hairbrushes as microphones on my parents bed (our stage)!!
“I got my mind set on you
I got my mind set on you
I got my mind set on you
I got my mind set on you
But it’s gonna take money
A whole lotta spending money
It’s gonne take plenty of money
To do it right child
It’s gonna take time
A whole lot of precious time
It’s gonna take patience and time, ummm
To do it, to do it, to do it, to do it, to do it,
To do it right child”
Yeah!! Your own space! It looks awesome! I envy you who have the time to make your very own home. I’m a bit concerned about the latest changes to Spaces, but I guess I’ll have to manage. It’s not like I have the time to really up and move right now with all the other moving I’m doing.
I love the word “swanky”; it totally discribes a bowling trophy
My highest score ever was 210 and it wasn’t during a competition. Bummer! I always get stage fright.
I wish you had a link to the actual song. I so remember it and wish it could bring back some memories of my own.
@Dana: Classic! Those are the best memories ever, aren’t they?
@Jungle Mama: Thanks very much.
Actually, the problem was that I didn’t have time to finish what I started almost 6 months ago. Vacation time was the only possible way to squeeze it in. One day you will move on… and I’ll be supporting you at every move.
Did you say 210???!!!! OMG I’ve only busted a 180, girl! You. Are. Awesome.
And the song? I need to find a way to add audio here. That’s my next move. Watch out.
@Angei: Schnieder reminds me of the Engineer at my office. He is TOTALLY SCHNIEDER! (Only not such a dork… I enjoy his company way more than watching the real Schnieder on “One Day at a Time” reruns.)
I never could get the Farrah look. We mixed girls (and Black girls, too) had a hard time with that. Cornrows were MUCH easier.
Oh, thanks, Kelly! Now I have “Bolero” stuck in my head.
I can’t tell you how many years I tried to get the Farrah look. Thick straight hair just would not cooperate! I loved One Day At A Time. And I’ve had The Wall stuck in my head all weekend. The local classic rock station is playing the Four Father’s of Rock. Having Lots of flashbacks.
@Mocha: Cornrows! Whoa… haven’t heard that in so long. (BTW: My hair was stick straight and only held half a curl. Can you say “AQUA NET?”)
@Eric:
@Pam: So it’s just one big flashback weekend for you? I hope you’re enjoying all the memories.
Love the new site! I covet it actually. Not sure what is going to happen at spaces, but I don’t think i could figure out how to break out on my own like this. Maybe someday, with all that spare time I seem to have.
and now you have pink floyd stuck in my head. did you hear those kids that sang on that album tried to sue for royalties or something like that?
Everytime i hear “Freshman” I think back to my Freshman year in high school…glad i don’t have to repeat those days!
The chocolate was great, i am never giving it up again.
I am sure i will have many great blogging stories after this trip!
Peace!
Is it not great when we can be transported back in time! Got to love it! Hey I see you were a student council person too! yeppers me too–both in High School and in University.
