Vista Dilemma
I’m salivating right now, and no, not because of the little bag of munchies I just whipped out of my desk. The drool I’m experiencing is directly related to the brand-spankin’-new-bright-and-shiny notebook computer that I found in my office today. *sigh* Yes, that sleek little machine is an absolute thing of beauty, and I’m in complete awe as I set it up right now. *melt*
Only… here’s the bad news: One, it’s not mine and two, the operating system is bad. The reason it’s not mine is because a high ranking person in my office asked me to buy it for her. (Dang!) And the problem with the operating system is that it’s not Windows XP (the one she’s familiar with) but Windows Vista Home Premium instead. And I’m afraid Vista will scare the living daylights out of that woman.
So here are my options:
- Keep Vista on the machine and hope she doesn’t realize it’s not running Windows XP.
- Ship it back to HP and order a replacement that won’t arrive until after the big meeting during which time she needs to have the notebook.
- Go grab a copy of Windows XP from Office Depot and load it on top of Vista.
- Pack up the notebook and run away with it before anyone catches wind that it ever arrived.
Decisions, decisions. This is a toughie.

It came preloaded eh? See I have an issue with preloaded anything to begin with (so much crap, so little hard drive space leftover).
HOME EDITION of Vista? blah. THAT right there would burn my britches.
Not hard.Install XP.
I’m on the “Pack up and run before anyone catches on” boat. Just look at the smooth shiny curves, you can probably do your makeup with it’s reflection capabilities. Come on CM…run.run..RUN. hehehe
@Deannie: Ah, but then I’ll wipe out all of the other sweet preloaded apps without CD’s for reinstallation. My goof. Under pressure I ordered too quickly without verifying the OS.
But you know what? I’m tweaking it to “look” like XP, and it’s not so bad after all. (Especially since she will only use it to play solitaire, email, and generate Word documents.) And as far as the Home version, I can see this notebook getting replaced before we roll out Vista anyway.
Have I convinced anyone besides myself? (Time’s running out!)
@Brad: So. Tempted. How did you ever guess?
I would go for the pack and run maneuver but you work with NUNS! I couldn’t live with myself sooo…
Just go with installing XP over Vista.
I read this lil funny in Reader’s Digest the other day…
I.T. people use the term PICNIC meaning “Problem In Chair Not In Computer”
@mannyed: PICNIC! I’ll never think of PICNIC’s the same again from this point on. That’s a good one.
@All: Just shared my tweaked little gem with my direct boss and she LOVES it. (Why do I get the feeling she wants one now, too? See? Told ya this machine was to die for!)
… as I try not to think about running out the door with it for fear of getting wacked with a ruler.
Don’t even get me started on the Cadbury’s…. I’ve done well to have only eaten one. I’m quite proud of myself, but you know what they say, pride cometh before the fall and I know that there are two lurking in a drawer in the kitchen. I put them out of sight, but out of mind is a whole other ballgame.
I didn’t think HP was selling XP systems anymore. Something about contracts with Microsoft to get everyone to upgrade…. you could clean off your laptop and overtake the shiny new one… maybe she won’t notice.
Seriously, if she can’t handle it, I’d just load XP to save you some trouble.
Sounds sweet! From what I hear Vista is pretty nice. We should be getting our free upgrade in the mail anytime. I’m personally looking forward to it.
Mannyed - I love the PICNIC euphemism (I can use that word for this, right?).
Vistas scares me with all the problems.
I say dine-n-dash before anyone catches on.
And take vacation time for all the Hail Mary’s you’ll need to recite.
@All: I’m taking a risk and doing the hand off… with Vista loaded. Please say a prayer for the Sisterhood as the first Sister in the Region takes on Vista. This is HUGE. (My job is on the line here, folks.)
@All (again): Guess I’m going to be salivating all over my own new laptop now. I just returned from working on a wireless network offsite and found my laptop DEAD. The harddrive is caput. Adios. (I’ve been wanting to give it to the CK’s and get a new one anyway… looks like a new harddrive first.)
Backups are a good thing. Uh-oh. Mine was several weeks ago. *sigh*
I’ve heard bad stuff about Vista, so I’m dreading the day I have to upgrade. Is it really better than XP? I’d love your opinions. And I’d also love one of those shiny new machines…*sigh*
@Ami: I guess I’m about to take it for a permanent test drive. Since I just so happened to be at Office Depot buying a travel mouse for the new notebook, well, the laptops invite me over for a visit.
Everyone together now: *oooo* *aaahhh*
Got me a Toshiba Satellite P105 for $999 with a $150 mail-in rebate. If it gets me through 3 years like my Compaq, it’s a steal.
‘Scuz me while I drool all over MY SHINY BLUE TOSHIBA. (BTW: Y’all are all invited to my office in an hour to watch DVD’s. Bring a pillow and your favorite stuffed animal.)
Yeah the last option sounds good to me.
I’m such a bad Catholic!
@Dana: Apparently I am, too. Hubs just send me an email with, “Are you sure you just didn’t accidently on purpose drop it after handling that new laptop yesterday…?”
That man. Jealous maybe?
I’ve yet to see Vista…is it really that bad?
