Smartphone Justification

Published by itchick at 12:18 pm under Internet, Summer, Tech Stuff, Weather

Finally it all made sense. Having a smartphone is an absolute must, especially if you live in tornado alley and find yourself seeking shelter under basement steps during tornado warnings. In fact, earlier this week as the winds kicked in at 90 mph uprooting our deck umbrella from its peaceful slumber and ripping it to shreds before flinging pieces of it out onto the lawn, I found myself tracking wall clouds and storm warnings via weather.com on my sweet little Treo. All this as power outages hit various locations around the city, having no affect whatsoever on our online activity. Oh no. We were good to go with internet access at our fingertips, right down there under the basement steps. Unfettered.

So guess who wouldn’t give this new gadget up for the world after that ordeal?
Poor Umbrella

Tornados, eh. I’ll put that in my pitch to the husband on why I Need That…

Glad you guys were safe (minus the umbrella incident)!

Wow, might be handy for an earthquake shelter too, if the infrastructure survives.

@mannyed: Living in NYC should be justification enough… and you can quote me on that. :) (Psst, Manny’s Dad? Manny’s Mom NEEDS. A. TREO.)

@CalmDragon: Exactly. Those CA earthquakes can be brutal.

Wow, hiding under the stairs. That would be a good reason to have a smart phone. We used to do the hide in the neighbor’s basement thing alot when I was a little kid . . . they had a basement, we didn’t. If we weren’t hiding in the basement, we were crowded in the bathroom. It’s amazing the things you learn growing up in the midwest. Sorry to hear about the umbrella, but glad the Catholic Family is okay!

Oh my goodness, glad you guys are alright!
Thank goodness for that mobile device (do they even deserve to be called phones anymore?)

Now.. I have to ask, does it have GPS?

@bdmp - Ever hid in a bathtub? Did that in my 1st apartment during the college days. Yes, we Midwesterners get creative when it comes to hiding from scary tornadoes.

@-sol - We’re glad, too… but it was quite an intense time. :/ And really, why call the TREO a ‘phone’ when it does so many different things? Good point. Let’s go with DEVICE from now on.

And it is GPS-ready, but I need to go back to the Sprint Store to get it configured. The fun just never seems to end.

Is it too much to ask for an inch of rain over 3h instead of 30 minutes?

    Is it?

Heard the weather reports and thought of you.

I drove around in a tornado 20 years ago - didn’t know those funnel clouds overhead were a tornado attack - we’d never had one in our parts before.

So yeah, it’s freaky stuff. Glad you’re OK.
