In Search of Wii

Published by itchick at 8:10 pm under Entertainment, Family, Google, Internet, Shopping, Tech Stuff

Unlike computer technology, gaming systems in our house aren’t always state-of-the-art, yet we do eventually hop on the bandwagon and venture out to buy the latest craze. This time all the rage is the Nintendo Wii. After the CK’s spent many a play date testing out this game system at friend’s homes, finally I caved and promised to buy one by the end of the school year, mostly as a way of congratulating them on their hard work and dedication throughout the year. So now the time has come, and I’m scrambling around like a headless chicken in search of a Wii. No problem, right?

Wrong. Check out my progress so far:

  • First stop - GAMERS, because these people are truly devoted to the electronic gaming industry and have every game, console and controller under the sun. That is, except the Wii. At this time anyway. So my name is now on their contact list if/when one should arrive.
  • Next stop - online. Circuit City sent me an email message claiming to have Wii consoles available online, then promptly pulled the rug out from under me when I went to check out my purchase. SOLD OUT?! Well, that didn’t take long. All other online discount stores showed the Wii as “Temporarily not available online”, which is exactly what Circuit City should’ve done in the first place.
  • Ambush time. At the crack of dawn, the CK’s and I put on our best running shoes and hit each and every store with the potential of carrying Wii (Target, Walmart, Toys ‘R Us, Shopko). We even made a spiffy name for ourselves, The Wii Hunters. Despite all that, we struck out on all counts but did find out possible shipping dates if/when the Wii should become available.
  • Finally, I hope. After our disappointing ambush attempt, I sat myself down at the computer determined to find a legitimate online store to sell me a Wii. My first choice? Walmart. While this isn’t my usual store of choice in purchasing electronics, Walmart landed at the top of my Google search for Wii so I clicked into the site. Imagine my surprise when I saw the words, IN STOCK beneath a picture of the Wii console! 10 minutes later and my order is complete and scheduled to ship. Sweet!

Yet why do I have this feeling of uncertainty? Hmmm… could it be because the order status still shows as “Processing” several hours after I’d submitted it? Or the lack of an email confirmation? Or maybe it’s just because I’ve been running all over the planet trying to get my hands on something not unlike the Holy Grail? I’m thinking all of those things combined. So now we just sit back and wait.

I just want a turn at Wii Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2008. That’ll be fun.

Ohhh… check your order. Really. I got the finks a Wii for Christmas - and Walmart was selling the “Wii” as in stock at list price, BUT!!! the fine print indicated they were actually only shipping a gift card for a Wii, redeemable at the local store of your choice. Talk about deceptive!

We got acquainted with our local big box store’s shipping schedule, and showed up on shipping morning. We were able to get one before they’d unpacked and stocked on the store shelves.

Good luck! And may I recommend Rayman Raving Rabbids 1 & 2? ;)

@Becca - Sort of. I finally received the confirmation email on my order. Otherwise, it all still shows as “processing” under the order status.

@JeriM - A gift card?! Now that is slimey. I think I would’ve felt better getting familiar with the shipping schedule and picking it up firsthand at the store. We just kept getting the same run-around, “Wii’s are sporatic - shipments are not all that reliable.” We’ll see if the online order was worth it.

Rayman Raving Rabbids 1 & 2? Thanks for the recommendation - we’ll check those out.
