Yet Another Tree Post

Published by itchick at 7:36 pm under Family, Life as I Remember It, Shopping

On my way back home from helping the lovely nuns with email, internet & printer issues, Office Depot channeled me. It said, ‘You know you want to stop over for a visit. Admit it, woman - you were just talking to that Catholic Family of yours about picking up the latest version of Family Tree Maker.’ So I caved and found myself pulling right into the store parking lot, walking all zombie-like down the aisle until I actually found the software I’d mentioned to the family just a couple of days ago. And now it’s here in my hot little hands. Pretty strong channeling there, eh?

So now what. Hmmm, exactly.

Well, now’s when I get started documenting all those crazy ancestors my family has been alluding to over the course of my lifetime. Relatives mostly whom I’ve never met, because I’ve grown up in an Air Force family and rarely (if ever) met any of them. Only now maybe I’ll be able to find some truth in those gossipy stories about how I’ve descended from royal British people - heck, they even say George W. Bush has a branch in the tree somewhere in there. Perhaps I’ll find one of those long lost relatives from Italy who gave me my dark hair and Italian nose. Or maybe I’ll learn about some of the Lutheran Pennsylvania Dutch ancestors from my maternal grandmother’s side of the family. I hope so on all counts - this could really get interesting.

So now I’m off to open the box and get started. What’s the worst that could happen? I mean, if anything, the Catholic Kids will get to know some family history out of all the research, right? Nothing wrong with that. Meanwhile, I have a sneaky feeling we’re only at the tip of a big huge iceberg.

I tried this once….very daunting task. I gave up.
But you hang in there. I think it’s a great idea and a way to tell the CK’s about relatives.

If You need any help in the how toos of family history let me know…We have traced parts of ours all the way back to the late 1400’s…and I do have royal blood! I also have the blood of fishermen, settlers, farmers, teachers, priests, and pirates…How is that for a diverse family history?

Good luck! I always wanted to do this but feel like I just don’t have enough info to really get it going. Let me know how it goes for you and maybe I’ll give it a try later down the road.

Sounds like this is a perfect birthday to yourself ;o)

@Nadine - Sorry to hear you gave up. Maybe someone else in your family will take it on someday. I’m giving it a try for the CK’s sake - my family history is very complicated.

@Hollie - Wow! You’re a pro!! I’ll be sure to find you when I need some pointers. Thanks.

@Gina - I’ll keep you posted on the progress we make. And yes, it is a perfect little b-day gift to me, isn’t it? :)

This is a test message from IE 6.0. Pay no attention.

IE 6? Dang woman, upgrade to 7! :-)

We have been doing ancestry stuff forever…and Mitch’s mom is related to Pochantas! How is that for celebrity! Yep, right back to the original ancestors!

Have fun with it! It is fun, and frustrating and you learn a whole lot about family you have never met, and hear from people all over the world once, if you put your tree on the internet like Mitch did. We are trying to find the people in the tree from Europe in the 1300’s. Daunting, but making inroads, little steps at a time. It is like a puzzle, lots of people have pieces, we just have to figure out how they all fit!

@Becca - lol, I actually do have IE 7 along with Firefox 2.0. I’m just testing on other platforms after receiving messages from users who can’t post comments on my blog. For some reason, I’m unable to duplicate the errors no matter what machine/platform/browser I test. Strange.

But WOW! Mitch’s mom is related to Pocahontas?! How cool is that? Very, very cool I say! Well, my uncle has done a great deal of research and offered me the trees he ‘built’. George W. Bush is in there, and I’m not making that up. So now I just need to fill in the blanks with my Mom’s sperm-donor, which shouldn’t be the easiest feat I’ve ever taken on. He’s still hiding out from all the back-child support he owes and has done a pretty good job of making himself scarce for over 30 years. You better believe he doesn’t want to be found, even by me - his long lost daughter whom he chose to forget.

It’s my birthday, so I’m not dwelling on that loser. Nope, not at all. So how did I get started on that rant anyway? :)

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY SWEETIE!!

I should have picked up on that…I am sorry, how old are you? 30? :-)

So what did you do for your birthday? Anything exciting?

Firefox 2.0? Come on, I am not even an IT type like you and I already have 3.0! Come into the deep end, the water really is fine! ;-)

And my father in law is related to Daniel Boone! Yes you are reading that one right!

    Happy belated 29th b-day!!

And I have both IE 6.0 and 7.0 too - because half our stuff at work doesn’t work w/ 7.0. Annoying. I wish MS would stop developing new platforms that don’t work and start making the ones they have more stable and secure. Sigh.

@Becca & JeriM - It’s like the birthday that keeps on giving. A big thank you for your kind wishes! I celebrated my big day at home w/the Catholic Peeps eating my favorite Chinese take-out and cake with buttercream frosting. They showered me with some pretty awesome gifts, too. Talk about spoiled!

@Becca - Daniel Boone? You have some seriously famous genes. WOW.

@JeriM - I agree and also wish MS would quit trying to force updates on us, especially when the new platform isn’t ready to hit the ground running. *sheesh*
