CCD Lesson Learned
As a catechist (CCD teacher to those non-Catholics reading this blog) for over 5 years, I often wonder if the catechumens (CCD students) ever absorb any information that I attempt to teach in lessons each week. I ask myself questions like Are they really getting it? and Did I make sense in explaining that difficult subject today? or Will the kids actually apply what they learned when they walk out the door? The list goes on and on.
These questions roll around in my head every single week that I teach, which is basically why having my own kids as students is a good thing. Because then I get the pleasure of seeing the after effects of CCD class and whether or not the message hit home for them. Truthfully, this can be a good or bad thing, but at least I have some idea if they learned anything.
Bringing me to this week and the result every catechist dreams of experiencing, when out of the blue Catholic Son said to me:
Mom, I wish original sin never happened. Because then there wouldn’t be so much bad evil stuff in this world.
Uh-huh, exactly! But after hearing CS make that statement, I stood there all shocked knowing the message from our weekly lesson made sense to Catholic Son, and that my standing there in front of the class preaching about how Adam and Eve’s weakness in the Garden of Eden actually started all that business of sin. And I realized maybe at least one other catechumen walked away learning something from class! Wishful thinking, but possibly.
This whole feeling of making a difference is pretty amazing, even better than riding Splash Mountain at Disney World. Ok, almost.

If only it never happened. Then the history of the peoples of the earth would need another story to tell the tale of the basic differences of good and evil. Oh, I mean - right on!
@CalmDragon - yeah, if it weren’t Adam & Eve, it might have been Chad & Emily… or Dylan & Tonya. After all, we are only human.
